In an eagerly anticipated day on the international business of racing, Roy and Plessis will be joining Edward Wray, Co-Founder and Chairman, Betfair; David Attenborough, Managing Director & CEO, Tabcorp; Simon Bazalgette, Group Chief Executive, The Jockey Club; Winfried Engelbrecht-Bresges, CEO, Hong Kong Jockey Club; Rod Street, CEO, Racing for Change and British Champions Series; Kim HengTeo, VP of Sales and Business Development, Singapore Turf Club; Paul Fisher, Group Managing Director, The Jockey Club Racecourses; Simon Clare, PR and Broadcast Director, Coral and Jamie Aitchison, Sports Editor, Channel 4. Both men join the session examining the fractured nature of the international horseracing community, and the wide range of vested interests within it. Traditionalists, ownership groups, betting operators, entrepreneurs and other businesses differ widely on how to reform the sport. Roy and Plessis will be expressing their opinions on the matter as well as explaining what their organisations are doing to prepare for the changing times ahead.
Paul Roy joined the British Horseracing Board as Chairman in 2006, becoming the first Chairman of the British Horseracing Authority in 2007. He is a keen racehorse owner, with a number of horses currently in training he also sits on the Horserace Betting Levy Board and is the Chairman of the property investment company, New River Retail plc and Vice President of the Philip Leverhulme Equine Hospital.
Rian Du Plessis joined Phumelela as its Group Chief Executive in 2008 and under him the organisation based in South Africa has continued to grow and post record earnings. Plessis showed his ability to judge the market by expanding the betting arm of Phumelela into football odds as horserace gambling in South Africa began to decline. During the 2010 FIFA World Cup Phumelela company Betting World posted profits of just over R3m. Plessis is currently in the process of expanding Phumelela’s betting operations to incorporate more outlets and more gaming options.
